Fr. Ghattas Awarded the Mayor’s City Builder Award
On Wednesday May 23rd, 2017, Mayor Jim Watson granted the Very Reverend Fr. Ghattas Hajal the “Mayor’s City Builder Award” in “recognition of his outstanding community service dedication to improving the quality of life of the citizens of Ottawa”.
Mayor Watson spoke about Fr. Ghattas’ contribution to the building of the Cathedral and the Orthodox Community of St. Elias. He also highlighted Fr. Ghattas’ outspoken personality in the Lebanese Canadian Community and how this has been translated into making the Ottawa Lebanese Festival an event that the entire city annually anticipates.
Fr. Ghattas, surrounded by his family, Fr. Nektarios, George Hanna, chairman of the Parish Council, and some other parishioners, and in the presence of the City Council, said the following speech in the occasion:
“Unless the Lord builds the house, Those who build it Labor in vain; Unless the Lord guard the City, Those who guard it, stay awake in vain.” Ps. 127:1
Your Worship, honorable Councilors, dear family and friends.
Our Lord has chosen some of us to build communities and take good care of them, and has chosen some of us to build cities and guard them.
We are His co-workers and can do the job successfully only with His guidance.
I thank the Lord for His help to build St. Elias Community here in Ottawa and for Him helping you, Mayor and Councilors to build such a beautiful city and make it the safest and cleanest City in Canada.
Thank you so much for graciously conferring upon me the Mayors City Builder Award.
A sincere thank you to our friend Lucy Ibrahim who kindly recommended me for such and honour.”
On Behalf of the Parish Council of the Cathedral, its organizations and all its faithful we congratulate Fr. Ghattas on an amazing achievement! Axios! God Grant you many years!
