Very Reverend Father Ghattas Hajal

The Dean and Pastor of St. Elias Antiochian Orthodox Cathedral is the Very Reverend Father Ghattas Hajal.  Fr. Ghattas was ordained to the Holy Priesthood on the Great Feast of Pentecost, May 27, 1977. After his ordination, while pastoring his parish, Fr. Ghattas continued to work as the manager of a bank in Lebanon.  Following the Lord’s calling, Fr. Ghattas & his family departed Lebanon to build a new life in Canada.  He established St. Mary’s Church in Montreal, and served as their first priest in charge.  In 1992, Fr. Ghattas assumed the pastorate of St. Elias Cathedral in Ottawa, Ontario at the request of His Eminence Metropolitan PHILIP.  Since his arrival at the Cathedral, membership has increased significantly, a new church temple was completed and the mortgage paid off.  Fr. Ghattas holds other postions of leadership in the Orthodox Church to include:

  • Dean of the Canadian Deanery of the Diocese of Ottawa, Eastern Canada, and Upstate New York
  • President of the Eastern Orthodox Clergy Association of Ottawa
  • Spiritual Adviser of The order of St. Ignatius of Antioch for the Diocese of Ottawa, Eastern Canada, and Upstate New York
  • Chaplain of the Orthodox Christian Fellowship at Carleton University
  • Member of the Interfaith Steering Committee of Ottawa

Having served at the Holy Altar for 35 years and counting, Fr. Ghattas continues to enrich the life of the Cathedral and its faithful with his pastoral experience and leadership.

Reverend Father Nektarios Najjar

Assistant Pastor Fr. Nektarios was born and raised in Lebanon.

He Graduated from the St. John of Damascus Institute of Theology at the University of Balamand, Lebanon, with a Bachelor in Theology in 2012, where he is still completing his Master of Theology Degree.

Fr. Nektarios is married to Kh. Miray Saikali since 2013.

While working as a registrar in the Faculty of theology in Balamand, Fr. Nektarios was ordained to Diaconate (in 2014) by His Eminence Metropolitan GEORGE Khodr of Mount Lebanon and served as a deacon at St. Elias Church in Sinelfil, Lebanon.

In June 2015, he was ordained to priesthood by His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH of New York & All North America.

He started serving St. Elias Cathedral in Ottawa since August 2015 after being assigned as an Assistant Pastor by His Eminence Metropolitan JOSEPH.

Fr. Nektarios speaks Arabic, English, French & Greek.
